The closer we looked at Samaritan’s Purse the more we were impressed at the range, diversity and efficiency of its outreaches. We were also very impressed with Samaritan’s Purse’s financial transparency in an age where so many charities are not always focusing their resources where they should. (See Charity Navigator)
Samaritan’s Purse Mission Statement
Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.
The organization serves the Church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
As our teams work in crisis areas of the world, people often ask, “Why did you come?” The answer is always the same: “We have come to help you in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Our ministry is all about Jesus—first, last, and always. As the Apostle Paul said, “For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Corinthians 4:5, NIV).
Here are some of the services they provide:
CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES
Forgotten by much of the world, millions of boys and girls struggle to survive under the most desperate of circumstances. Many must eke out a living on their own, begging on the streets, scavenging through trash, or working in sweatshops. Samaritan’s Purse gives these children a fresh start on a better life, while offering a new beginning in Christ. LEARN MORE
CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Samaritan’s Purse helps to build communities by constructing houses, schools, hospitals, and churches. Our projects provide shelter for families who lost everything in disasters, education opportunities to help break the cycle of poverty, facilities for physical and spiritual healing, and places to build up the body of Christ. CRISIS & DISASTER RESPONSE
When victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine cry out for help, Samaritan’s Purse is often the first to answer. We specialize in meeting critical needs for victims of war, disaster, famine, and epidemics in the world’s most troubled regions, often working through ministry partners already on the scene of a crisis. In the U.S., we quickly respond when hurricanes, tornadoes, and other storms strike, mobilizing staff and volunteers to provide emergency aid to disaster victims. LEARN MORE
ANIMALS, AGRICULTURE & LIVELIHOODS
About 2.6 billion people around the world depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Many of them produce just enough food to survive. Families engaged in subsistence farming often live in chronic poverty and malnutrition, lacking the skills to get the most out of their small patches of land. Others have seen their livelihoods wiped out by drought, disaster, or war. Thousands of impoverished farmers, herders, and fishermen have received the resources and training they need to feed their families and even obtain a modest income that can be used for education, medical care, or other needs. FEEDING PROGRAMS
When food runs out, hope is scarce. It’s a situation often seen in countries where people are left to starve because of natural disasters, war and genocide, and widespread poverty. Samaritan’s Purse is committed to reaching out to the hungry with both physical and spiritual nourishment. In some cases, our work is in response to a natural disaster or wartime crisis, and focuses on blanket feeding of a large group of people. Other times, we address a chronic lack of food or nutrition brought on by famine and poverty. LEARN MORE
HEALTH AND MEDICAL
Common ailments often go undetected in many developing countries and quickly become a matter of life or death. People who suffer major health issues such as heart defects or AIDS face the real threat of never receiving life-giving treatment. Samaritan’s Purse provides doctors, nurses, medical equipment, and other aid while administering hope through the healing power of the Great Physician. LEARN MORE
WATER, SANITATION & HYGIENE
It is estimated that 1.58 million people die each year from diarrheal diseases caused by unclean water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene habits. This is equivalent to one person dying every 20 seconds. The majority of these are children in developing countries. Providing clean water, coupled with health and hygiene education, is perhaps the most preventative measure we can take in keeping our world from infectious disease. Samaritan’s Purse has a variety of programs around the world to provide clean water and promote safe hygiene practices. LEARN MORE
WOMEN’S PROGRAMS
Women all over the world face the dark reality of abandonment, exploitation, and abuse. Samaritan’s Purse works to reach the most vulnerable of these with the light of the Gospel. We meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of women through programs like abuse prevention, safe migration and trafficking awareness, general and maternal health, vocational training, family counseling, and discipleship. OPERATION HEAL OUR PATRIOTS
Operation Heal Our Patriots gives wounded veterans and their spouses the opportunity for spiritual refreshment, physical renewal, and marriage enrichment. Couples participate in Biblically-based seminars that help strengthen their relationships with God and others and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation with outdoor activities at our Alaskan wilderness lodge. We continue to support these men and women after their initial stay, keeping their spiritual needs and marriages a priority. LEARN MORE
DISCIPLESHIP, EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Learning how to read and write or acquiring a trade or skill is invaluable for children and adults struggling to break the cycle of poverty caused by a lack of resources, access, and opportunity. Samaritan’s Purse is working to teach not only literacy and trades, but also to bring people to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through programs that share the Gospel and help believers grow in their faith.
