The term “Freethinker” is often adopted by atheists. But, are Atheists Freethinkers or Deluded?
“Freethought” according to Wiki:
Freethought or free thought is a philosophical viewpoint which holds that positions regarding truth should be formed on the basis of logic, reason, and empiricism, rather than authority, tradition, revelation, or other dogma. The cognitive application of freethought is known as “freethinking”, and practitioners of freethought are known as “freethinkers”. The term first came into use in the 17th century to indicate people who inquired into the basis of traditional religious beliefs.
A free thinker is defined as a person who forms his or her own opinions about important subjects (such as religion and politics) instead of accepting what others say. Freethinkers are heavily committed to the use of scientific inquiry, and logic. The skeptical application of science implies freedom from the intellectually limiting effects of confirmation bias, cognitive bias, conventional wisdom, popular culture, prejudice, or sectarianism. (Emphases mine)
Are atheists always logical freethinkers void of dogma or presupposition? Can they fairly and logically articulate why they don’t believe in God? Is their atheism solely derived from impartial logic? Experience, indicates that this isn’t the always case. In fact atheists generally go to astronomically imaginative lengths to avoid God (e.g., the “multiverse“).
Ray Comfort interviewed some young atheists in his short movie “the Atheist Delusion.” It’s well worth watching. Comfort also interviewed atheist physicist Laurence Krauss. Comfort was restricted to only asking questions. Even so, I thought Krauss’ body language projected discomfort with the process.
Creation Ministries International reviewed Krauss’ book A Universe from Nothing HERE. See also the article Dr Lawrence Krauss says people should doubt evolution! Dr Richard Dawkins got tangled in the Something from Nothing mess and is lampooned for his apparent confusion in YouTube videos such as this one.
You can find Comfort’s video at the end of Cripplegate’s article: Why you Should Watch The Atheist Delusion by Ray Comfort
Excerpt from the article:
Having to prove the existence of God to an atheist is like having to prove the existence of the sun, at noon on a clear day. Yet millions are embracing the foolishness of atheism. “The Atheist Delusion” pulls back the curtain and reveals what is going on in the mind of those who deny the obvious. It introduces you to a number of atheists who you will follow as they go where the evidence leads, find a roadblock, and enter into a place of honesty that is rarely seen on film.
