An Interview with Mark Durie on Islam

August 26, 2021 By Alf Cengia

An Interview with Mark Durie on Islam

Below is an interview with Mark Durie on Islam. Among other things he discusses Afghanistan the Taliban and how Islam impacts the world now, and has done in the past.

I first encountered Anglican Pastor and Academic Dr. Mark Durie when he was interviewed by Jamie Glazov some time after 9/11. The thing that struck me was his reasoned thinking on Islam. It came at a time when the main stream media was pushing Islam as a religion of peace. Not only the media but many Christian churches were doing the same.

Worshiping the Same God?

Durie’s reasoned study and adherence to the biblical texts shone during the 2015 Wheaton College Larycia Hawkins debacle. Hawkins came out stating,

I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God. … As part of my Advent Worship, I will wear the hijab to work at Wheaton College, to play in Chi-town, in the airport and on the airplane to my home state that initiated one of the first anti-Sharia laws (read: unconstitutional and Islamophobic), and at church. (Emphasis mine)

Among Hawkins’ defenders were Gary Burge and Miroslav Volf. Durie biblically responded to this premise HERE. See also our article The Same God?

The Interview on Islam

In the interview below, Durie offers thoughts about the American withdrawal from Afghanistan and what it will likely mean for the people there, especially Christians. He discusses the differences between the Taliban and Isis, and the irregularities between Christianity and Islam. Is Islam connected to Christianity via Abrahamic roots, or is something else at work? What about immigration in light of Afghanistan and what is happening in Europe? What about Sharia Law?

I appreciate that Durie ignored the interviewer’s comment about Trump and the election and stuck to the topic. Finally what Durie had to say about the Christian’s attitude to a more prominent Islam is much food for thought. Mark Durie is no wild eyed doomsday prophet. Everyone ought to watch this interview and consider what he says about the relationship between Islam, the world and Christianity.

“A conversation with globally recognised Islamics scholar, academic, and Anglican pastor, Rev Dr Mark Durie. If you want to understand more about what is happening in Afghanistan, how events there fit into the broader Muslim world, and what some implications for the rest of the world might be…”
