God won’t give you more than you can handle.
I think we all have been told this at some point or another during difficult times. Our typical response – “I just wish He didn’t think I was so strong!” or “I wish He didn’t have so much faith in me.” Well, guess what? He doesn’t and you shouldn’t think it either.
Because not only is this not true, but I think the very opposite is true. Paul says, “For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia . . . For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we received the sentence of death” (2 Cor. 1:8-9).
Utterly burdened beyond our strength.
We despaired of life itself.
We felt that we received the sentence of death.
That sounds like more than Paul could handle, to me. But why did God do this? Paul answers that in the second part of verse nine: “But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.” God gave Paul more than he could handle so that he could learn to rely on Him.
