Victor Long, a civil rights lawyer based out of Decatur, Georgia, was enjoying breakfast at a local Chick-fil-A when he made a huge mistake. He dropped a wad of cash, to the tune of $1,200 (which he was going to use for his business), on the floor as he ate.
Long discovered his error while in line at the bank, when he realized that he had no money to deposit. He never expected to see that money again, as he told WXIA-TV:
“I had gone to so many places that day, I didn’t even think about backtracking, because I figured anybody who found the money, the way people need things now, it probably never was going to come back.”
Long, who teaches Sunday School at a Baptist church on the weekends, didn’t count on the kindness of the employees at his local Chick-fil-A.
An employee named Jacob King spotted the money and, instead of pocketing it, immediately took it to his manager:
“I just looked down and I saw a little green square thing on the floor,” King said. “I picked it up, and I was a little worried that somebody was missing that much money.”
Because the attorney who dropped the money had decided not to backtrack, the staff at Chick-fil-A had to go above and beyond in order to identify and locate the man.
This included a deep analysis of security footage and an eventual plea for the man to come forward, which was aired on a local news station.
It worked. Victor Long was overjoyed to learn that strangers had been keeping his money safe.
He journeyed to Chick-fil-A and thanked the employees personally, especially Jacob King:
“That shows the goodness in him as well as the goodness in this establishment,” Long said. “They have here good people. Good honest people who are willing to work and to serve.”
“And I can’t imagine what Chick-fil-A had to go through to find me, and they made a tremendous effort to find me and to make sure I got the money back.”
After getting his money back, Long invited King and his mother out for a nice, Sunday meal; then, he sat down to a late lunch at his favorite fast food restaurant.
