This post is a review of “Prayer and Spiritual Warfare,” by Charles H Spurgeon. This six-book edition was published in 1998 by Whitaker House (paperback 575 pages).
Note: Since “Prayer and Spiritual Warfare” is actually six books in one, any proper review of this “book” ought to have six different reviews. However that would take a long time, and I’m not a great reviewer to begin with. So this is really less of a review and more of a recommendation of this six-books-in-one edition of Spurgeon’s sermons of these themes.
First of all I must confess that I am a book SNOB. I love beautiful hard cover books, with nice dust covers and crisp white pages. I also love the smell of ink – yes, I know that’s a bit creepy-weird. It is what it is.
The only two formats available (as far as I’m aware) for “Prayer and Spiritual Warfare” are paperback and Kindle. The cover of this book sort of reminds me of a Frank Peretti novel and the paper quality is cheap. But, as it is often said, never judge a book by its cover; or the quality of its pages and ink for that matter. The good news is that this edition is very affordable! In fact it’s cheap.
“Prayer and Spiritual Warfare” is filled with precious gems and gold nuggets born out of years of personal experience. And it ought to be, given Spurgeon’s life testimony. Spurgeon is a man who suffered bouts of depression and ill health. He was attacked in his ministry, yet God used him mightily. He was called the “Prince of Preachers” and is still influential, especially in Reformed circles.
Spurgeon understood the connection between Praise, Worship, Prayer and Spiritual Warfare, and the true nature of the latter. He was the man who told his congregation: “May God help me, if you cease to pray for me! Let me know the day and I must cease to preach.” As he recounts in these books, his calling and success came about through God’s grace and answered prayer. This book lays it all out for the reader, in a pastoral and devotional manner.
To give you an idea of the feast in this edition, here are the titles of the Six Books which make it up:
Book One: The Power in Prayer
Book Two: Praying Successfully
Book Three: The Golden Key of Prayer
Book Four: Finding Peace in Life’s Storms
Book Five: The practice of Praise
Book Six: Power over Satan
It may be that you might find some of the books or subtitles available free to read on the internet. For example, in Book Six there is a chapter called Satanic Hindrances, which you can read HERE. I made use of it in my article Satanic Hindrances: Charles Spurgeon, and elsewhere.
Charles Spurgeon is always relevant – perhaps even more so today. This book guides the reader to praise and worship; to faith in all kinds of tribulation; to prayer in all circumstances, and through proper use of the Word of God in Spiritual Warfare. I feel every Christian should have a copy of this edition. It is never far away from me, though I don’t use it as often as I ought to.
Highly recommended!
