In a world full of sin and depression, the first thing we ought to do is to take comfort in Jesus Christ. He is our True Peace.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4
Here are examples of hymns from those who found comfort in Christ.
Horatius Bonar
From the Hymnary
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me and rest;
lay down, thou weary one, lay down
thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
so weary, worn, and sad;
I found in Him a resting place,
and He has made me glad.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
the living water, thirsty one;
stoop down, and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in Him.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s Light;
look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,
and all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in Him my Star, my Sun;
and in that Light of life I’ll walk,
till trav’ling days are done.
George Herbert
LOVE bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back,
Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack
From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning
If I lack’d anything.
‘A guest,’ I answer’d, ‘worthy to be here:’
Love said, ‘You shall be he.’
‘I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear,
I cannot look on Thee.’
Love took my hand and smiling did reply,
‘Who made the eyes but I?’
‘Truth, Lord; but I have marr’d them: let my shame
Go where it doth deserve.’
‘And know you not,’ says Love, ‘Who bore the blame?’
‘My dear, then I will serve.’
‘You must sit down,’ says Love, ‘and taste my meat.’
So I did sit and eat.
George W. Doane
Taken from Spurgeon’s Own Hymn Book
THOU art the way—to thee alone
From sin and death we flee,
And he who would the Father seek,
Must seek Him, Lord, by thee.
Thou art the Truth—Thy word alone,
Sound wisdom can impart;
Thou only canst inform the mind
And purify the heart.
The art the life—the rending tomb
Proclaims Thy conq’ring arm,
And those who put their trust in Thee
Nor death nor hell shall harm.
Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life—
Grant us that Way to know,
That Truth to keep, that Life to win,
Whose joys eternal flow.
Safe in the Arms of Jesus
Take comfort in Jesus Christ!
