As we get older, we’re likely to be increasingly exposed to the specter and inevitability of our mortality, through the example of the deaths of relatives and friends. We also experience this through the steady, unrelenting degradation of our bodies. We get old and die. Sometimes we don’t even make it to old age. We do have a Hope. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
