When Nations abandon God

August 28, 2025 By Alf Cengia

When nations abandon God, they become prey to all kinds of violence and vile lusts; for the heart is desperately wicked (Jer 17:9).

When nations abandon God, they become prey to all kinds of violence and vile lusts; for the heart is desperately wicked (Jer 17:9).

In his book, The Rage Against God, Peter Hitchens gives an account of his own journey from atheism to becoming a committed Christian. As noted in a previous article, he recounted how, returning to England from living overseas for a number of years, he noted a decline in the culture.

Hitchens wrote,

“The accelerating decline of civility in Britain, which struck me very hard when I returned there in 1995 after nearly five years in Russia and the USA, has several causes. The rapid vanishing of Christianity from public consciousness and life, as the last fully Christian generation ages and disappears, seems to be a major part of it. I do not think I would have been half so shocked by the squalor and rudeness of 1991 Moscow if I had not come from a country where Christian forbearance was still well established. If I had then been able to see the London of 2010, I would have been equally shocked.” (Page 91)

Scripture

Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!”

He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury, saying, “But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain.”

“I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall shatter them like earthenware.'”

Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the LORD with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son that He not become angry and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him! Psalm 2:1-12

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting. Rom 1:28

A few thoughts

At the time of writing, it is towards the latter end of 2025. What we see in Britain is far worse than Hitchens found when he returned to England. Among other things, the United Kingdom has had unprecedented migration from Islamic nations, ushering in another culture that is contra Christian values and it is reaping that fruit. UK police have even asked Muslim immigrants not to assault women!

Nils A. Haug wrote,

“As for England and all of Great Britain, the greatest empire of its time is no more – long gone. Rule Britannia no longer rules anything, not even the streets of London.” (The England We Once Respected)

Also at time of writing we’re seeing English flags flying everywhere, and even painted on streets and buildings in a massive movement. I’d suggest this is a positive thing that sends a message to its leaders. But the REAL change needs to be a faith-based one that turns to the Lord Jesus Christ. There are some indicators that many are coming to Christ. I hope so for England’s sake.

Of course lasting change won’t happen before the Lord returns. Until then we continue praying for the salvation of this world.

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it! Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity. Psalm 98:7-9
